Hello. I am Nino Castellano from Welwynquail.com and today I am going to talk to you about quails.

How to maintain a quail pen. Everyday, when I feed the birds, I will check over my pens for damage that during the night may have occurred. This damage can occur from aging of the birds or aging of the netting or it can occur that the vermin, the fox or rats try to get into the various pens.

So, therefore, it is very important that I make sure that there are no holes or no damage to the pen because in failing to do so, you can lose your birds. In particular, you have to make sure that the roof, the sides are all together because if there is a strong wind, it could be that the roof can move away. And if this happens, again, you can lose your birds.

So, you see, it is of major importance that you make sure that the pens are always in ship shape. In failing so, you can lose all your birds. One more important aspect of maintaining a bird pen, a quail pen, is the cleaning.

Every other week, or every week, whenever you got the time or whenever the pen has gotten dirty, you have to clean and disinfect it. I usually use, I put snow flakes on the floor. Snow flakes are sort of a wood that is mashed very fine.

When I remove all the snow flakes, then I will wash my floor with. That is a very good disinfectant that keeps all the bugs and bacteria that may be in the pen. And then I replace the sawdust with the fresh snow flakes.

This is done usually every other week or more often if I have found that there are too many birds in the pen and the snow flakes get wasted. So, it is of major importance to keep the pen very much clean and secure because in failing so, you can lose the birds or they will fly away or they die by illness that they can acquire inside of the pen due to malfunctions of the pen itself. One of the repairs that often appear in my pens are the holes below the aviary such that, if this happens, the birds from one aviary go to the other and if you are breeding, that means that your breeding program can be lost because the birds going into the other aviary can breed with the birds that are in the aviary where they moved into and instead of breeding pure quails, you may breed hybrids or they can breed with father and sister, brother and sister, father and mother.

It can happen. Anything. So, to keep your pool gene pure, it is most important that you do all the repairs that you need when they occur. .
