How To Make A Barbecued Ham, Cheddar And Pear Sandwich
- Serves:
- 2
- Preparation Time:
- 10 minutes
- Cooking Time:
- 35 minutes
- Total Time:
- 45 minutes
Step 1: You will need...
- 4 slices of white bread
- 4 slices of Serrano or Parma ham
- 4 slices of mild cheddar, alternatively use Swiss Gruyere or Emmental
- 1 ripe pear, peeled and sliced
- 1 small bunch of rocket
- 50 g butter
- salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 brush
- 1 small saucepan
- 1 set of tongs
- 1 heavy pan or plate
- 1 chopping board
- 1 knife
- 1 barbecue, either charcoal or gas
- 1 bottle of water for dousing any flames
Step 2: Prepare the barbecue
If you have a charcoal barbeque light it 30-45 minutes before you plan to cook. It is ready when there are no more flames and the charcoal has turned white. If you are using a gas barbeque, light it up on high and leave it for 20 minutes.
Step 3: Melt the butter
Place the small saucepan over a high heat and add the butter. When it begins to bubble, use the brush to give it a quick stir and then remove from it the heat.
Step 4: Season the bread
Brush the top side of each slice of bread with the melted butter and then season it with a little salt and pepper. Don't add too much salt since ham is naturally salty. Finally, turn each piece of bread over and coat the other side with the butter.
Step 5: Put the sandwich together
Add the cheese, ham, rocket and pear to both sandwiches then top with the other half of bread.
Step 6: Barbecue the sandwiches
Put both sandwiches onto the barbecue and place the heavy pan or plate on top to press them down. Grill them for 2 minutes. Now turn the sandwiches over, place the pan back on top and grill for a further couple of minutes.
Step 7: Slice and serve
Slice each sandwich in half and serve while hot with a small salad.
