How To Make A Book, Part Two
Bookbinding Part 2: This video provides a clear, step by step approach to making books. By following the detailed instructions, you will learn how to bind books using relatively few tools and little material. For a DVD go to: http://www.papierdesign.de/wrapped/bookbinding.htm
Step 1: Initial Preparation
Cut off a piece of thread. Wax the thread with a candle or beeswax, and then thread it through the needle. Open the end-paper section in the middle, and lay it onto the edge of the table. With the needle, pierce the upper edge from inside-out. Pass the thread from outside-in through this hole. Pierce on both sides of the tape, and pass the thread to the outside of the signature. Crossing over the tape, insert the needle into the next hole. The sewing should now look like this. Continue sewing in the same way.
Step 2: Sewing
Rub down the fold of the section between the tapes, with the edge of a bone folder. Open the second signature in the middle, lay it flush onto the first, and sew it in the same way: but in the opposite direction. The diagram shows the sewing of the first two sections. Knot the two ends of the thread to connect the two signatures.
Sewing the third signature:
Step 3: Finishing Touches
To secure the third signature, pass the thread between the first two sections at the cattle stitch. Continue sewing the remaining signatures like this. Sewing the last signature: To complete the sewing, wrap the thread several times, between the last signatures.Cut off the excess thread.
