When you are thinking about making a business proposal or you might also call it a pitch, the best advice I have ever heard is that when you are fishing you do not put on the hook the food you like, you put on the hook the food the fish likes and that in a nutshell is what a good pitch or a good business proposal is all about. Before the meeting, you really need to think from the perspective of the client. What is it that they are looking for when you walk into the room? What they want from you? What would solve their problems? what is going to really make their day? and if you can do some research on the internet and pull up all the things that they say about what matters to them and those are the things that you really want to be talking about when you get into the room with them.

So, that is the research side of things, there is also what you do actually when you walk into the room and I wrote a book a couple of years ago called Star Qualities and I went and talked to celebrities about what they did when they were pitching. I wanted the things that they said to me was that telling stories is a really powerful way to hook people's attention. If you can have 3 or 4 really good stories about why this idea is powerful and what it can do for people.

It means that you do not have to be too scripted that you can seem really relaxed and conversational, everybody likes a good story so what are your good stories. When you walk into the room the big question that you have in your mind is how can I help? And Symond Cowell also calls this make them feel important. He says that you have to imagine that the other person has a sign on their head that says make me feel important€ and if you can do that in your business proposal you are much more likely to get the gig.

I think the final piece of advice that I would give you to really make a good impression is that you need to make sure that when you walk in the room you are relaxed. While you are sitting in reception, you need to focus on keeping your breathing nice and low, be present to how you are sitting, the room around you, what people are doing and do not start checking your E-mails, do not start making phone calls, just sit really quietly, this is something that Kate Winslet said to me and it is a really good piece of advice because when you walk in the room if you look relaxed and at ease instantly you make them feel relaxed and at ease and that is very powerful because we like working with people who make us feel relaxed. So, those are my top tips for making a good business proposal or a pitch.
