How To Make A Cat Costume

A cat is a great go-to costume idea for Hallowe'en or fancy dress parties. Professional prop and puppet maker Corina Bona shows you how to make your own cat mask at home. Miaow!

You Will Need

  • grey fur fabric
  • PVA glue
  • pipe cleaners
  • tissue paper
  • scissors
  • string
  • cardboard
  • button (optional)

Method

Take a sheet of heavy paper or card and fold it in half. Draw half of your mask shape on to one side on the paper and cut it out. Mark and cut your eye holes too.

Take your fur fabric and smooth it out. Place the mask onto the fabric and check you have enough to cover the mask. Cover the mask in PVA glue and stick it onto the underside of the fabric and press it down. Trim away any excess fabric. Leave to dry for a couple of hours with a heavy book on top to ensure the fabric sticks. Cut out the eye holes and trim some of the fabric around the eyes. Once you're happy with the shape of the eyes, take a black marker and draw around the eyeholes with your black marker to add some definition.

To make the whiskers, take 3 pipe cleaners and pinch and twist them together in the middle. Separate them out a little, glue some scrunched tissue paper on around the middle of the whiskers and then glue this onto the mask. You can also add a button to form the nose.

To make your mask ready to wear, staple some string on the back of the mask, next to the eye holes. Place some masking tape on top of the staples if they feel uncomfortable. Tie the string to fit your head.
