How To Make A Clown Cake

This clown cake will raise a laugh at any party. We've teamed up with expert Sugarcrafter Jan Clement-May and sugarcraft school, Squires Kitchen, to show you how to make it.

Step 1: You will need

  • 1 Large sponge cake
  • 1 Small sponge cake
  • Buttercream
  • Blue food colouring
  • Flying saucers
  • Dolly mixtures
  • Giant chocolate buttons
  • Smarties
  • Red sugarpaste
  • Strawberry laces
  • Marshmallows

Step 2: Shape cakes

Trim two sides off the small cake to make a triangular shape, and cut the bottom of the triangle with a gentle concave curve. This is the point of the hat. Take the two side pieces and cut a third off opposite ends of each. These will form the rim of the hat.

Step 3: Buttercream

Cover the large cake with white buttercream, using a pallette knife to smooth it on. Colour the remaining buttercream with the blue food colouring, and cover the hat with this blue buttercream.

Step 4: Decorate the hat

Stick a row of flying saucers down the centre of the hat for baubles, and line the rim with dolly mixtures.

Step 5: The face

Position two giant chocolate buttons for the eyes, add a dab of buttercream and stick a smartie onto each eye to give it a highlight. Stick red smarties in a curve to form a mouth. Take a chunk of red sugarpaste and roll it into a ball between your hands. Position this as the nose. Curl strawberry laces into ringlets, and spread these around the side of the face as hair. Finally alternate pink and white marshmallows around the bottom of the cake for the clown's ruff.
