Hi, my name is Stan Rawlinson. I'm a dog behaviourist and obedience trainer. This is Charlie, he's a 7-year-old rescue dog.

He's cross Jack Russell dachshund with a stretch limo Jack Russel, if you want to put it that way. He's one of the four dogs that I've got here today. Today, I'm going to be explaining how to make a dog vomit.

Now, that may sound a little bit strange why would you possibly want to make a dog vomit. Well, it may at sometime ingest poison. Rat poison is laid about all over the place.

Sometimes, you may need under those circumstances to get a dog to throw up if you can catch it early enough or if it eats something that is detrimental to it and can't pass through its system, then you're going to need to try and get it to vomit that up as quick as possible and of course, you need to get it to the vet especially if there's any complications afterwards. Blood in the urine or feces, swelling in the stomach, anything like that, bring it straight down to a vet but sometimes you need to be able to do it yourself. Ok, the easiest way is taking an object, something sharp or something it clearly cannot digest, then what you would do is you would take a piece of bread.

I'm not going to give Charlie this bread because he's fat enough as it is but I'm going to take a piece of bread and I'm going to feed Charlie with it and that will make a dough-y thing as it goes down and when that happens, it normally will wrap around something that is foreign in there. Then I will take some salt and two handfuls or two good old shakes in the back of the throat of the dog. I would then hold the dog's head up like that and rub throats to make it swallow.

Once it's swallowed the salt, I'll then put some newspaper down and put it on there because of the mess that's going to go up. It will make the dog vomit and normally, the part will wrap around the thing that you need to bring back up and that's why you need to put the bread down there as well. If you have soda crystals in the house, it's even better.

Soda crystals will act far quicker than the salt, the salt is fairly quick but it will act much better and it's what vets do themselves, so soda crystals are great but nearly everyone has salt in their home, so you are able to do that. So remember, sharp objects, anything difficult back of the throat, some bread first, put it somewhere where it's not going to make too much of a mess in the house when it vomits and then make sure you either take it down to the vets or if it's not that serious, then just watch to make sure there's no swelling in the stomach, no diarreha, no problems later on and best of luck with our dogs.
