How To Make A Emo Hair Bow

Over-sized bows are a great accessory for the ultimate scene look! Miss Libby Rose, fashion designer and sewing teacher, shows you how to make the basic bow; now it's up to you to decide on your own unique colour and fabric combinations!

You Will Need

  • 2 pieces of fabric, 30 cm X 15 cm
  • 1 piece of fabric, 15 cm X 5 cm
  • pins
  • sewing needles
  • thread
  • sewing machine
  • 1 hair clip
  • chalk

Method

Lay your large pieces of fabric on top of each other with their right side (the sides you want to be seen) together, then pin all the way around the sewing line, with the pins perpendicular to the sewing line. Leave a gap of about 5 cm at the bottom in the middle; you can mark this with chalk to remind yourself.

Fold the smaller piece of fabric in half lengthways and pin it.

Sew the small piece of fabric, leaving about 0.5 cm seam allowance. Start with a backwards stitch, then forwards to the end, finishing with another backwards stitch. Sew the large piece of fabric in the same way, remembering to lift the foot to turn the corners, and leaving a gap where you made your chalk mark.

Remove the pins from your fabrics. Trim off the corners of the larger piece without cutting through the stitching.

Turn the large piece inside out, then poke the corners with a sharp object to get clean edges. Turn the small piece of fabric inside out.

Pin the gap at the bottom of the large piece of fabric, then sew as close as you can to the edge with the sewing machine.

Pinch the middle of the large piece of fabric to get a bow shape, wrap the smaller piece tightly around the middle, and stitch it at the back with the sewing machine to keep it in place.

Hand sew the bow to your hair clip, or glue it with a glue gun.
