How To Make A Gingerbread House 1: Make And Shape The Gingerbread

Ingredients

  • 500 g plain flour
  • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 2 tsp ground ginger
  • 2 pinches ground cloves
  • 180 g unsalted butter
  • 150 g soft brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 4 tbsp golden syrup
  • 2 tbsp treacle

Equipment

  • 2 wall templates (16cm x 16cm)
  • 2 roof templates (16cm x 13cm)
  • 2 front sides (16cm x 13cm reaching 23cm at centre of roof)

Step 1: Melt The Ingredients

Preheat your oven to 180° c. In a pan over a medium heat add the golden syrup and the treacle. Next pour in the sugar and give the ingredients a good mix. Next add the ginger, cinnamon and cloves and stir. Take off the heat and add the butter. Keep stirring until the butter has all melted. Follow by adding the water.

Step 2: Add The Dry Ingredients

Now stir in the bicarbonate of soda. Gradually add the flour and stir to start making the dough. Your mixture will become thicker as you add the flour.

Step 3: Turn Out Your Dough

When your mixture is too thick to stir start using your hands to combine the ingredients. Turn the mixture onto your work surface and begin kneading the dough until it is smooth and all the ingredients are well combined. Wrap the dough in cling film and place in the fridge for 30 minutes.

Step 4: Shape The Dough

After 30 minutes take the dough out of the fridge and remove the cling film. Roll out the dough to 5mm thickness. Take your templates and and cut around them with a sharp knife or a pizza cutter and place them onto baking paper. Remould your dough after you have cut out your templates until you have all of your shapes. Once all of your shapes have been cut out place on to a baking tray and refridgerate for 1 hour.

Step 5: Bake The Shapes

After an hour place the shapes into your oven and cook for 8-10 minutes. Once golden brown remove from the oven and leave to cool on a wire rack.
