Hair conditioner is one of those expensive items in our list of must-haves that is difficult to avoid. Here's your chance to get nothing less than soft, shiny and nourished hair with this simple recipe to make the perfect hair conditioner at home.
We all want soft shiny hair and today, I'm going to show you how to make a homemade conditioner. The ingredients I've selected are oils and waters. Now, water - it could be tap water, it could be bottled water but I've used infused rosemary water.
And the oils I have here are herbal oil which is very similar to your skin's serum, to your hair's grease, but this time, it's controllable. It will make a beautiful, rich, healthy, active hair. I'm also using rice bran oil which helps keep your hair soft.
I've selected one other ingredient which is oat protein and the oats will help my hair from being too frizzy and flyaway and add a degree of shine. My last two ingredients are rosemary essential oil which works with our Rosemary water not only to give the smell but to give a good nourished condition to our hair. And then finally, a functional ingredient, emulsifying wax.
We all know that water and oil doesn't like to mix together. But emulsifying wax will not only allow them to mix together but will help thicken our conditioner into a lovely cream. To make our conditioner, we need to warm the oils and we need to warm the water.
So first of all, I'm going to weigh the water into our pot here. We need 80 grams of rosemary water, 83! That will do. And in the other jug, I'm putting the oils and the wax.
The herbal oil is going to be the largest part of our conditioner after the water. So I'm using 20 grams of herbal oil and then 5 or 6 grams of rice bran oil - 6 grams. And our emulsifying wax goes in and I'm putting in 10 grams, that will be enough to make sure that the water and the oil bind together and stay together.
Put that on to the heat. Allow the waters to warm up while the wax is melting. So, I can see that our wax is melted and our waters are warmed through.
So, now, we're just going to pour one into the other to get them blended. Now, if I pour the melted wax and oils into my water and don't stir, then it will go wrong. We can probably see that the two ingredients are trying to split out from each other.
We've now got an oily layer on the top of a milky layer of water. So, you have to make sure that you give it a good stir for at least the next 2 minutes to make sure that the ingredients combine and hold. While I'm stirring it, I'll be helping it to cool down which will help it thicken up a little bit.
I've been stirring this for about seven minutes. It's thickened up a little and it's the perfect consistency now for light conditioner. Although we used rosemary water, I'm going to boost the power of the rosemary by adding a little rosemary essential oil.
Rosemary will give my hair a good shine and just help make this an even better conditioner. Now, this doesn't have any preservative in. So, I would say the shelf-life for this is 6-8 weeks if I keep it in a cool bathroom.
But I know that I'll easily use that within 6-8 weeks. And that's how you make a conditioner.
