How To Make A Jump Ring: Jump rings are a key component of most types of jewelry, and this tutorial shows you how to work with them. Using these few simple tips, your jump ring closures will be as secure as any professional's.
Hi. I'm Jessica from the London Jewelry School and today, I'm going to show you how to make some jewelry. Now I'm going to show you how to close a jump ring.
Jump rings are used a lot in jewelry and it's a really important skill to be able to close them properly. All you need for this project is a jump ring, I'm using a seven millimeter silver jump ring, some chain nose pliers, and some flat nose pliers. So I'm going to hold my jump ring in my flat nose pliers and hold my chain nose pliers on the other side.
First of all, I'm going to open my jump ring. Always open your jump ring front to back, and never side to side. If you open them side to side, you can damage the jump ring, and sometimes break it.
Now, I could thread on anything I wanted to, whether it be a pendant, or a chain, or a pair of earrings. And when it comes to closing it, this is how you do it. Obviously, I want to bring the two sides together, but if I just do that, it's not a particularly strong close.
So first of all, I want to wiggle the metal backwards and forwards to make it stronger. When you work with metal, when you're moving it, it would harden, which makes it tougher. So I'll show you.
You're just going to gently wiggle the two sides backwards and forwards, and you should hear a click. Then, gradually bring your jump ring to a close in the middle, and the final test is to hold it up to the light, and make sure that nothing is shining through the gap. And that's how you close your jump rings!.
