Step 1: You will need

  • 10 ml vodka
  • 10 ml white rum
  • 10 ml gin
  • 10 ml triple sec
  • 10 ml tequila
  • 1 lime or lemon
  • some cola
  • some ice
  • 1 long glass
  • 1 knife
  • some straws
  • 1 chopping board
  • 1 cocktail shaker
  • 1 shot measure

Step 2: Spirits

Add 10 ml of vodka to a glass. Then add the same amount of rum, and the same amount of gin. Then add 10 ml of triple sec, the sweet orange flavoured liqueur. Lastly, add the tequila.

Step 3: Lemon juice

Take the lemon or lime, whichever you prefer, and cut it in half. Squeeze both halves and add 50ml of juice to the shaker.

Step 4: Ice

Put plenty of ice in the serving glass too. Fill the rest of the mixing glass with cubed ice.

Step 5: Cola

Fill three quarters of the serving glass with chilled cola.

Step 6: Shake

Press down firmly to seal, and shake vigorously over your shoulder for about 20 seconds.

When you see condensation on the outside of the shaker and it feels very cold, you know that the cocktail is thoroughly mixed.

Step 7: Release

Release the top by rocking it back and forth.

Step 8: Strain

Strain the spirits into the serving glass.

Step 9: Garnish

Add a lemon wedge to the edge of the glass, a couple of straws to the drink, and serve.

Go with Cointreau instead of Triple Sec, if you have Cointreau handy.

Here in the US, at least, a LIIT usually has just a couple of splashes of coke at the end to give it a tea-like color. I've never had one with as much coke as this recipe recommends. Not criticizing, though. I'm all for trying new things!

If you add Midori instead of Coke you get a much more potent yet sweet, very delicious drink called a TOKYO TEA :) or a Radioactive L.I.I.T... try it ...its pretty sexy ;)

hey, izzit okie to mix the 5 liquors and keep it for months? then when the drink is needed then mix in the lemon juice, simple syrup (some LIIT recipes uses this) and coke??

...and another thing, don't ever think that if you go to a bar and ask for a Long Island that you are going to be served 3/4's of a glass of cola. You won't. You will get a glass nearly full of booze in a recipe designed to hide the taste. So be careful. Oh, and not all bars make them well. So try a few different spots until you find one that you like. And never let a bartender make a long island from a pre-mixed solution. Unless you see at least 5 types of booze go into the glass, you are getting something other than the drink you ordered. DO NOT BE AFRAID TO SEND IT BACK. Most self-respecting bar tenders understand.
