** and, finally, a tip: if you forget which spirits go into the drink, just remember: it's pretty much your basic clear liquors. Triple Sec is probably the most important, in terms of flavor.

I would suggest using light rum over dark rum so it doses not over power the drink. Also using slightly less tequila for the same reason unless high quality. Also a better alternative for triple sec would be Cointreau over brandy. And as well using a lot less cola(about 100ml) in the drink and adding a small amount of gome (sugar melted in boiling water) if you find the drink to sour.

I disagree with you. You're making a totally new drink and don't forget that you cannot change the recipe without changing cocktail's name. So it's very simple: if you don't like it - don't drink it!

#1 - It is call "Iced Tea" because it tastes like iced tea. There is nothing to do with prohibition.

#2 - This drink is is more of a Rum and Coke than a Long Island. If you were to reverse the amounts of Coke and booze, that is a true recipe. 3/4 Liquor, 1/4 Cola.

It is a shame this video was made and I hope that no one makes this drink and tells someone they made Long Islands...

...and another thing, don't ever think that if you go to a bar and ask for a Long Island that you are going to be served 3/4's of a glass of cola. You won't. You will get a glass nearly full of booze in a recipe designed to hide the taste. So be careful.

Oh, and not all bars make them well. So try a few different spots until you find one that you like. And never let a bartender make a long island from a pre-mixed solution. Unless you see at least 5 types of booze go into the glass, you are getting something other than the drink you ordered. DO NOT BE AFRAID TO SEND IT BACK. Most self-respecting bar tenders understand.

Here in the US, at least, a LIIT usually has just a couple of splashes of coke at the end to give it a tea-like color. I've never had one with as much coke as this recipe recommends. Not criticizing, though. I'm all for trying new things!
