How To Make A Mint Julep Cocktail
- Preparation Time:
- 5 minutes
- Total Time:
- 5 minutes
Step 1: You will need
- 10- 15 mint leaves
- 50 ml bourbon
- 15 ml sugar syrup
- crushed ice
- short glass
- bar spoon
- standard double shot measure
- measuring spoons
- measuring jug
Step 2: Mint
Drop the mint leaves into the bottom of the serving glass and gentle bruise with the base of the bar spoon. This will release the flavours and aroma of the mint.
Step 3: Ice
Fill the glass with crushed ice
Step 4: Sugar Syrup
Add 15 ml of sugar syrup
Step 5: Bourbon
Pour over 50 ml of bourbon
Step 6: Stir
Churn the cocktail with the end of the bar spoon to mix the ingredients. Top up with crushed ice and stir once more, just enough to mix the drink without melting the ice too much. Finally add a little more ice to fill the cocktail to the brim
Step 7: Garnish
Add a short straw and a sprig of mint to garnish
And Serve

Tips & Comments
I use the recipe of Alton Brown from Food Network, and have been absolutely pleased with it. I generally use 10-15 leaves (depending on how strong I want the flavor of mint), put 1 teaspoon of sugar on top of it, and then make a paste of the mint in the glass by muddling with a pestel. Then pour crushed ice on top of the paste, then I pour 2 1/2 oz of bourbon, and finally top the glass with sprite. I enjoy it after stirring the drink.
don't follow this video.. I'm sure this is gonna be a nice cocktail but it's definitely not called mint julep... you don't make it like this
lol u should put about 5 leaves
The South must rise again, to destroy those who don't know how to make our famous drink. Do NOT follow this video. A Mint Julep is NOT made with sugar syrup, the ice must be crushed much finer than shown, one does NOT place that much mint in the bottom of the glass, a silver or silver plated goblet is the preferred receptacle for this elixir, the outside of the receptacle is "frosted" by nature, and these corrections are only the ones which come immediately to mind. I'm sure the bartender is more than competent on most drinks, but the advice on how to make the Mint Julep would be laughable, were it not so serious a subject.
