How To Make A Paper Turkey Face Mask

Gobble gobble! Professional prop and puppet maker Corina Bona shows you how to make a turkey mask that's perfect for Thanksgiving or Hallowe'en.

You Will Need

  • red paper
  • yellow paper
  • grey paper
  • black marker pen
  • glue stick
  • scissors
  • sticky tape
  • string
  • 1 paper plate
  • stapler
  • masking tape

Method

Draw some eyes and more oblong head shape on the underside of the paper plate and cut them out.

To make the beak, roll the yellow piece of paper into a cone shape and glue the outer edge to the cone with the glue stick. Once you've done this, fold the cone in half and cut away the back. Cut some flaps into the back of the beak and fold the flaps down. Coat the flaps with the glue stick and attach to the paper plate. Don't about where the yellow flaps are located as they'll be covered by the red paper later. Once the glue has dried, cut away at the bottom of the plate, towards the beak, to make it more like a turkey's face!

Now take a piece of red paper, fold it in half and cut out two tongue-like shapes to form the hanging gobbly bits of the turkey's face. Glue them on. Cut out some smaller shapes in red paper and glue these under the eyes. The yellows flaps will now be completely covered.

Fold a sheet of grey paper as many times as you can. Cut a feather shape out of the folded paper. Once you have the basic shape you would like, feather the paper by making some small cuts on either side of the feather shape. Roll the individual feather shapes around your black marker pen to curl them and make them look more realistic. Add the feathers to the back top of the mask first, working from the outer edges towards the centre. Use the black marker to add some spotty details and nostrils.

To wear your mask, add some string to the back using a stapler and some masking tape. Staple the string near to the eye holes. Your mask is now ready to wear!
