How To Make A Tomato Basil Sauce

Tomato sauce is a staple of Italian cuisine. In this guide food writer and cookery school owner Katie Caldesi shows you how to make this simple home style recipe for a tomato sauce with infused vegetables and basil.

  • 800 g tinned plum tomatoes
  • 1 sprig of basil
  • 1 celery stick
  • 1 carrot, cut in half
  • 1 onion, peeled and quartered
  • salt
  • pepper

Step 1: Heat the Elements

Heat the olive oil in a pan and add the carrot, the cut up celery, the onion, the basil and a good pinch of salt and pepper. Fry for about 5 minutes to release the flavours.

Step 2: Add the Tomato

Mash the tomatoes with a potato masher, then add them to the pan of frying vegetables. Simmer for about 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 3: Remove the vegetables

Remove the vegetables, and your tomato sauce is ready to use!
