How To Make A Watermelon Martini Cocktail

Step 1: You will need:

Some watermelon
A glass of water
50ml of vodka
two teaspoons of melon liqueur
one teaspoon of Sugar Gomme - Mauro uses a Melon flavoured Gomme, but you don't have to
and cubed ice

You'll also need the following utensils:
A blender
A martini glass
A knife
A chopping board
A Cocktail shaker - you could use a Boston shaker which is a metallic shaker with a mixing glass that also acts as a lid, but any cocktail shaker will do.
and you'll also need a cocktail strainer
To measure out the ingredients, use a standard single shot measure like this which is 25ml, and a standard double shot measure which is 50ml. If you don't have these, you could use a measuring jug or measuring spoons. Use a standard bar spoon which is 5ml or an ordinary teaspoon.

Step 2: Chill the martini glass

Either put the empty martini glass in the freezer, or fill it with ice, add a little water, and leave to one side to chill.

Step 3: Watermelon

Firstly de-skin some watermelon and cut it into small pieces. Take out the seeds and put the flesh into the blender. You only need a small amount. Add a dash of water. Close the lid and blend on a high speed setting for 10 seconds, or until the watermelon is puréed. Then pour it into a jug.

Step 4: Add the ingredients

Now add 50 ml of vodka to the mixing glass
Add two teaspoons of watermelon liqueur
One teaspoon of sugar gomme
And 50 ml of watermelon juice

Step 5: Ice

Now fill the mixing glass with ice. This will dilute the alcohol, so that the drink is fresh and well balanced.

Step 6: Shake

Put the top half of the cocktail shaker on. Slap it down firmly to seal. Hold the top and bottom, and shake vigorously for about 20 seconds. The watermelon Martini needs to be shaken hard to stop it being too thick.

Step 7: HANDY HINT

When there is condensation on the outside of the shaker and it feels very cold, then it's mixed.

Step 8: Release

Tap the bottom half to loosen the two. Release the glass by rocking it back and forth.

Step 9: Strain

Use the strainer over the top of the cocktail shaker and strain the cocktail into the frozen martini glass like this.

Step 10: Garnish

Garnish the glass with two small slices of watermelon. The drink should be a beautiful shade of pink, with no seeds.
