How To Make American Pancakes

American Pancakes Recipe served with sweet maple syrup, whipped cream and fresh fruit. Sample our American Pancakes recipe.

Step 1:

You will need

  • 250 g flour
  • 100 g sugar
  • 7 g baking powder
  • 1 Tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 egg
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 500 ml milk
  • 30 g melted butter
  • 60 ml vegetable oil for frying
  • whipped cream
  • icing sugar
  • maple syrup
  • fresh fruit
  • 1 bowl
  • 1 ladle
  • 1 whisk
  • 1 spatula
  • 1 tray
  • 1 frying pan

Step 2:

Mix the dry ingredients

Start your pancakes by whisking together the flour, the sugar, and the baking powder in a large mixing bowl.

Step 3:

Mix the wet ingredients

Into the container with the milk add the egg yolk, the whole egg, the vanilla, and the melted butter and stir together thoroughly.

Step 4:

Mix all the ingredients

Now add about one-half of the wet mixture to the contents of the mixing bowl and blend all together. Continue to keep adding more liquid until it reaches the consistency of a thick, runny paste.
Don't worry if there is a little of the milk mixture left over.

Step 5:

Cook the pancakes

Place a little oil in the medium hot frying pan and when it's heated, ladle in some of the batter. Let the pancake cook until it starts to bubble on the top and then flip it over to the other side.
If you find the pan is a little dry, just add a little oil around the pancake. Also, make sure the pan does not get overly hot. About one minute after turning, remove the pancake from the frying pan and repeat the process with the rest of the batter.

Step 6:

Present and serve

Individually dust each pancake with a little icing sugar and place them onto a serving plate, one on top of the other. Garnish with strawberries and blueberries. Trickle a little maple syrup on top and add a spoonful of whipped cream.
Sprinkle with a little more icing sugar and you are ready to enjoy your American pancakes!

They look good, but I am wondering what part of America these are supposed to be from?! We use buttermilk for our pancakes (for good pancakes anyway). Vanilla extract?! No! They are also thicker than those; those almost resemble crepes. We don't usually pile all that crap on there either--especially the powdered sugar--wtf?! Slap some syrup on there and that's that!

This recipe is one of the weirdest I have ever seen...this is not the way (as an American myself) I have EVER prepared pancakes. The ingredients I've always used never include vanilla and are actually made mostly with buttermilk, flour, and eggs!! My suggestion is to try and ignore the frying bit: this is really not even close to the real McCoy. You just need to grease the skillet with a little butter (enough to keep it from sticking.) and then when they are ready top them off with decent maple syrup and some berries: strawberries and blueberries are nice, but try blackberries or slices of banana...yum.

These din't look like american style pancakes. They should be thicker.

The recipe looks yummy, but along with what anonymous said, the pancakes should be bigger with 3 to a pile(shortstack) or 5 to a pile

The video lies! We actually use a tiny bit of butter, enough to coat the pan so it doesn't stick. After the first pat there really should be no need to add more, unless you use cast iron. They also over do the sugar (all one really needs is the syrup) and I would really recommend no more than two toppings at a time.
