Preparation Time:

Cooking Time:
15 minutes
Total Time:
20 minutes
Oven Temperature:
180° c  -  360° f

Step 1: You will need

  • 320 g bacon
  • 8 tbsp water
  • 1 onion
  • 220 g self-raising flour
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 120 g shredded suet
  • 1 bowl
  • 1 rolling pin
  • 1 chopping board
  • 1 kitchen knife
  • 1 scissors
  • 1 baking tray
  • 1 pastry brush
  • 1 fork

Step 2: Preparation

Chop and finely dice the onion. Take the scissors and cut the bacon into small pieces.

Next, put the self-raising flour into a bowl, add the suet on top and mix them together with a fork.

Add the water very gradually until a soft - but not sticky - dough forms.

Step 3: Make dough base

Sprinkle flour onto your work surface. Remove the dough from the bowl and roll it into an oblong shape.

Step 4: Add bacon and onion

Cover the dough base with bacon and onion, leaving a 2 cm edge clear all round.

Step 5: Roll the roly poly

Using the pastry brush, dampen the edges with water. Ease the dough away from the work surface and roll it, dusting it with extra flour if necessary.

It will end up in a cylindrical shape, Swiss Roll style. The dampened edges will help keep it bound together.

Step 6: Place in oven

Place the roly poly in an oiled baking tray and into an oven preheated to 200C. Bake for 25 minutes.

Step 7: Serve

Remove the cooked roly poly from the oven and transfer to a plate.

Slice into 4 equal pieces and serve.

Does anybody use an alternative meat to bacon? My mum used to make this in the 70's but I am sure it was not bacon.

I really wonder how you English can dare to eat such a thing... It's again a proof that British cooking is very special and only appreciated in UK...

OOPS. Substitute grack for crack & egs for eggs. Typo's argghh!

  7. johnniegeeee

Hmm wonder if it would be ok to grack a few beaten egs into that mix to help combine it. Sounds very nice!

BACON ROLL! My Mum made this for me all the time when I was a kid and I do it for mine now. Only difference is that we wrap it in tin foil and steam for around an hour. Lush! I'll have to try it baked :)

You can also use this recipe as a dessert filling the pastry with fruit, jam, golden syrup, chocolate instead of the bacon and onion, add sugar instead of salt, serve with custard. Very warming and filling especially in winter and kids will love it!
