I didn't know this was a British thing! My brothers and I "invented" open-faced bean sandwiches years ago in Arkansas. ;-) We put the bread (untoasted) on a baking sheet, add the pork-and-beans, and grate cheese on top, then pop that in the oven so the bread is toasted, beans are bubbly, and cheese is oozing. It's yummy! We'll call it "Americanized Beans on Toast" from now on. Oh, and the *only* cheese to use on our version is velveeta. Melts so well.

I reckon Branston beans have set the new bean standard. The rich, thick sauce is always intense in flavour where as with Heinz it's like a lottery to get a decent batch.

i just wanted to see how somebody else would cook simple things and it does look rather tasty! its nice that people have different ways of cooking the same things . i usually let my toast burn and forget the beans because it cooks so quick and im always busy, until now!

Step One. Put the beans in a fine sieve, and wash away the sugary sauce. Chop up a couple of tinned tomatoes to replace the sauce. Serve on Wholemeal or granary toast with Parmesan cheese.
