How To Make Beautiful Resin Jewellery
Vannetta Seecharran on how to make resin jewelry by pouring epoxy resin into molds and the types of things you can add to the resin to make your jewelry more interesting.
In this video, we are going to show how to make resin jewelry. The resin we are going to use today is called epoxy resin. What you will need to make resin jewelry, you will need a set of scales, some pigment, and the pigment will need to be the correct type for the resin you are using.
You will need some mixing sticks, some mold dish, some resin, I have epoxy resin, some catalyst and a mask. This is a special fume mask to stop you from inhaling the fumes. You will also need a pair of latex gloves to protect your hands, you will also need a little cup, and these are just ordinary little plastic drinking cups.
Whatever resins you are using, you will need to read the instructions carefully because resins are toxic. You need to do this in a very well-ventilated room. The other thing that is very important about resin is that once you have poured your resin, do not leave it in a room you will be sleeping in.
Place the cup on the scale, set the scale to zero, pour 50 grams of resin into a cup, set the scale to zero again, and then add 20 grams of catalyst so that the proportion is 40 to 100. Mix this resin very well, do not stir it aggressively, and stir it gently to avoid getting air bubbles. With resin, you can embed all sorts of objects, you can add gold leaf, you can add thread, you could have a stone and pour resin over it so that it is encased, you can really experiment with it.
So, we are also going to add some pigment, you can get a large range of colors. If you want to mix your colors together, it is best to mix your colors in a separate container, and then add resin to it. I am going to make an entire pot of red, you take the sick and dip it into the pigment, you need very little pigment.
One of the reasons that your resin could go wrong is if you add to much pigment. You do not need a lot of pigment at all. You can buy opaque pigment or transparent pigment.
You mix your pigment into the resin. Resin takes quite a long time to cure. After 24 hours, it will be touch-dry, but really before you take it out of the mold, you will need to let it cure for 2 days.
You pour your resin into your mold dish. If you spill over, it is okay, because you can always sand it down afterwards. Now, with resin, it is best to overfill it a little bit because as that resin cures, it shrinks, so it will get sucked into the piece.
Just fill it so that it is over full just a little bit, not too much. When the resin has set, when you come back to the resin the next day or the day after, it should be fairly hard. As a bracelet, if it is not completely set, you would be able to squeeze it together.
If that happens, you should set it back in the mold dish and let it set for a few days. And that is how you make resin jewelry.
