How To Make Brown Plasticine
In this video, Mad Jack from Science Boffins takes you step by step into making brown plasticine for your kid's art project or party.
I'm now going to show you how to make brown plasticine. We've got a few good ingredients for this and they are a brown wax crayon, some neutral coloured boot polish, some petroleum jelly, some plain flour, I'm going to use a cup to put it into, and we need to heat the ingredients up so we're going to be using a bain-marie which is boiling water in a saucepan and a separate bowl on top and everything will be added in here and mixed and heated. Okay, as we can see, we've got the water boiling nicely so we can get our wax crayon.
We're going to break it up into a few pieces. You can see straightaway, it's starting to melt, so at this point, we're going to take some boot polish. About a tablespoon will do and start to let that melt down.
Now, we also need to add some petroleum jelly. Again, about a tablespoon will do for this amount of plasticine. Start to get that mixed and we need that Vaseline to keep it nice and malleable.
We don't want it to go too solid once it's cooled down so keep that mixing. This would take a few minutes so you really do need it mostly to have melted before we add our next ingredient. So at this point, we're going to keep it on the heat but we're going to add some plain flour and we're going to do that just to stop it being too greasy to the touch.
It just firms it up a bit. Mix that in. Don't worry about the un-melted wax, keep going a little bit again.
I really can't tell you the exact amounts so you usually have to do this just by experience. Obviously if you are using more, if you wanted to make more, you'd have to put in more. So we're almost there now.
Right, let's put in a bit more, okay. So at this point, everything is nice and melted, we've mixed in all the flour so we're going to transfer it to a separate pot which I have here and we've got to take the bowl out. So you definitely need to protect your hands here with oven gloves.
I'm using a towel. I'm just going to take this out like that. I have my bowl from earlier.
Pour that in. So, this needs now to go into the fridge or freezer, 15 or 20 minutes just to harden it up a bit, and once it's ready, you will have brown plasticine. .
