How To Make Cheese Sauce

Cheese Sauce recipe. This is ideal for brightening up vegetables and is a great complement to many other dishes. Our Cheese Sauce recipe is a must to master!

Step 1:

You will need…

  • 120 g cheddar cheese
  • 600 ml milk
  • 40 g plain flour
  • 40 g butter
  • ½ tsp freshly grated nutmeg
  • salt and pepper
  • 1 whisk
  • 1 saucepan

Step 2:

Heat the milk

Place a pan on a low heat. Add the milk, butter and flour. Whisk continuously until it comes to a simmer.

Step 3:

Turn the heat down

Once simmering, turn the heat down and keep whisking for a further five minutes until it becomes a thick, smooth sauce.

Step 4:

Add the cheese

When the sauce is smooth, add the cheese. Stir it in, add a pinch of nutmeg and season with salt and pepper. Whisk constantly for a further five minutes until everything is thoroughly combined.

Step 5:

Serve

Take the pan off the heat and serve immediately. And that's how you make cheese sauce the VideoJug way. Why not try it on broccoli or cauliflower?

fantastic. Whole family loved it. No need to add flour little bit at a time as some suggest. The secret to avoid lumps is to keep whisking as the recipe suggest. follow as instructed and enjoy.

It's easier if you melt the butter and mix the flour (and a drop of mustard if you like) into that, and then slowly add the milk while it's on a low heat. Less mixing and it's a lot faster. Also less likely to get flour lumps. BTW Cheese sauce is EASY in the microwave!

Add a teaspoon of English mustard too - especially if it's cauliflower cheese with bacon
