How To Make Chocolate And Orange Cake
- Serves:
- 8
- Preparation Time:
- 40 minutes
- Cooking Time:
- 25 minutes
- Total Time:
- 1 hour 5 minutes
- Oven Temperature:
- 160° c - 320° f
Step 1: You will need
- 380 g dark chocolate, chopped
- 240 g butter, cubed
- 100 ml fresh orange juice
- zest of 1 orange
- 5 eggs
- 100 g sugar
- 1 tbsp vanilla
- 100 g flour
- for the chocolate glaze:
- 200 g dark chocolate, chopped
- 200 ml cream
- 2 saucepans
- 1 bowl
- 1 electric mixer with whisk attachment
- 1 rubber spatula
- 1 spring-form pan 26cm in diameter, lined with parchment paper
- 1 wooden skewer
Step 2: Preheat the oven
Set your oven to 160°C (325°F/ gas mark 3).
Step 3: Make the chocolate base
Fill the saucepan about a third full with water and bring to the boil. Place a stainless steel bowl over the saucepan, making sure that the bottom does not touch the boiling water.
Add the chocolate, butter, orange juice and orange zest. Stir it occasionally to help the mixture melt more quickly. Once the butter is melted, remove the bowl from the heat and set it aside.
If you desire, you can add some orange-flavoured liqueur at this stage.
Step 4: Make the batter
Put the eggs, sugar and vanilla into the mixer bowl. Mix them together on a medium to high speed and continue to whip until the volume is roughly double that of the original amount. Then remove the bowl from the mixer.
Step 5: Continue the batter
Add the egg mixture to the melted chocolate, slowly folding it in with the rubber spatula. Continue to fold it all together until well combined.
Next, sprinkle in the flour and mix well.
Step 6: Bake
Pour the batter into the spring-form pan, place it in the oven and let it bake for 20-25 minutes.
Around 20 minutes into the cooking time, check the orange cake to see if it's done. Insert the wooden skewer into the centre of the cake. If it comes out free of batter, your orange cake can now be removed from the oven.
Leave it to cool down to room temperature and then remove from the tin.
Step 7: Make the chocolate glaze
Pour the cream into a saucepan and heat until close to boiling point. Remove it from the heat.
Add the hot cream to the chocolate and blend them together well.
Step 8: Glaze and cool
Pour the chocolate glaze onto the cake and using the rubber spatula, spread it evenly over the surface. This is easier to do if you elevate the cake.
Allow the glaze to cool to room temperature.
Step 9: Serve
Your Chocolate and Orange Cake is now ready to serve.
Try it with Candied Citrus, the recipe for which can be found on our website.
Tips & Comments
This chocolate and orange cake is so nice and YUMMY
I'M ABSOLUTELY BLOWN AWAY by how good and easy this cake is! I rarely leave comments for recipes I've tried but I just have to for this- I'm eating the cake right now! I made it for the FIRST TIME yesterday for my housemate's birthday. I wanted a simple recipe using the ingredients I already have in my pantry without having to go to the shops. I was expected it to have that 'home-made cake taste' but it taste just as good as the shops! I used SF flour and put it in the oven for 45 minutes. I didn't have a circular tin so I used a rectangular one. I also used a separate recipe for the chocolate glazing (just melt chocolate, butter and corn syrup) for the glazing as I didn't have cream. Turned out SPECTACULAR! THANK YOU VIDEO JUG!!!! I'll be making this again and again!!!
I used plain flour as this is how you get the cake to not rise, but if you like a deeper cake thats less dense you can use sf flour also. I put brandy in, gave a really nice flavour with the choc and orange. You can make this with any citrus fruit, but with the fruit flavour its a bit too much as a chocolate cake to be honest.
Hi! Any idea what flour to use??? ll purpose flour , plain flour or self raising flour??? Tx
Baked chocolate & orange cake for my neighbour...recommended her to add to her favs.
Hello, Please kindly advise me what flour that u r using? Thanks looking forward ur reply
do you have to use cooking chocolate?
What type of flour (plain or self raising) & sugar (caster or Ordinary)??
I think I used the wrong flour here... I used SR flour so the cake took a lot longer to cook 45 mins but came out delicious, light and moist (and double the size shown in the video)... it was a great success and I will continue to make it with Self Raising Flour as everyone enjoyed it immensely.
I was really pleased after cooking this cake. It came out really rich and moist with a wonderful orange taste, a must do for all of those who love chocolate!
