Temp:

Step 1: You will need

  • 400 g flour
  • 50 g cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • A pinch of salt
  • 120 g chocolate chips
  • 45 g sugar
  • 120 g butter, cold, cut into cubes
  • 2 egg yolks, beaten
  • 120 ml yoghurt
  • 200 ml cream
  • 50 g flour for dusting
  • bowl
  • spoon
  • rolling pin
  • ring cutter
  • baking tray lined with baking paper

Step 2: Preheat the oven

Firstly, preheat the oven to 200°C, 400°F or gas mark 6.

Step 3: Combine the dry ingredients

Next, place the flour into a large bowl, then add the cocoa powder, sugar, salt, chocolate chips, baking powder and baking soda. Mix everything together well with a spoon.

Step 4: Add the cold butter

Now add the cubed cold butter and mix it in with your hands, squishing it through your fingers to incorporate it fully. Don't worry about any lumps that you may have at this point.

Step 5: Add the wet ingredients

Now spoon in the beaten egg yolks, the yoghurt and the cream. Using a spoon, combine it all together well to make a chunky dough.

Step 6: Roll the dough

Sprinkle some flour onto a working surface, place the dough onto it and then sprinkle the dough with some flour.

A useful tip! Placing the dough in the fridge to cool down makes the dough easier to work with!

Now, with your rolling pin, start to roll the dough backwards and forwards into a 1.5cm thick rough circle. Then with your small cutter, cut the dough into 4cm rings and place on a baking tray lined with baking paper.

Continue to roll, cut and transfer to the baking tray, until all the dough is used, making sure that there is enough room for expansion between each scone. You may find you have to cook the scones in batches.

Step 7: Bake

Place the scones into the preheated oven and bake for roughly 12 minutes. Remove from the oven after this time.

Step 8: Serve

Eat them hot or cold with some butter if you wish, or with a dollop of fresh cream and enjoy with your afternoon tea!
