How To Make Colored Frosting

Ingredients

  • 250 g butter, unsalted
  • 500 g icing sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • food paste colouring

Method

Place in the butter and icing sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer and mix on a low speed, to prevent the icing sugar from going everywhere. When the frosting starts to incorporate, turn the mixer up to a higher speed and mix for 3 minutes. Add the vanilla extract and mix through.

Place the icing in separate bowl and add a small amount of paste colouring using a cocktail stick. Mix together and add more to achieve the colour you'd like. Because the butter can make the frosting a yellow colour. For a blue frosting, for example, use a dark blue food paste colouring to prevent it from going green. You could also experiment with a small amount of frosting in a bowl.
