Shobha George, owner of Dog About Town pet bakery and boutique, is going to show you how to make cream cheese and honey dog treats. A sweet but healthy biscuit for your pet.

Step 1: You will need

  • 400 g whole-wheat flour
  • 200 g cream cheese, softened
  • 120 ml chicken stock or water
  • 85 ml honey
  • 1 egg
  • 50 ml vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 knob of butter
  • 1 bowl
  • 1 freezer bag
  • 1 rolling pin
  • some biscuit cutters
  • 1 baking tray

Step 2: Combine the ingredients

In a bowl, combine
400g of whole-wheat flour
120ml chicken stock or water
50ml of vegetable oil
200g of softened cream cheese
85ml of honey
1 egg
and 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract

Mix together using your hands until the ingredients have combined to form a dough.

If you don't want to make a big batch of biscuits now, take as much as you need and place the rest in a freezer bag and freeze. This will keep for about 2 months.

Step 3: The dough

Roll out the dough to the thickness you desire and cut out as many biscuits as you can being careful not to waste too much of the dough.

Larger dogs will prefer larger, thicker biscuits with a more satisfying crunch, whereas smaller dogs won't be able to fit their jaws around big biscuits.

Step 4: Bake

Grease a baking tray with a little butter. Lay the biscuits on the tray and place in the preheated oven for 10 to 15 minutes until golden brown.

Step 5: Cool

Remove the treats from the oven and allow them to cool at room temperature.

I would NEVER add honey to dog biscuits unless you brush his teeth thoroughly after it's eaten! Your dog does not need sugar, it's not healthy! I make flour our of the kibble my dog eats, add a bit of stock, corn starch, hard cheese and oil and combine it in the food processor to a thin dough which can be spread on the baking plate with a big syringe (for baking, don't know what they're called). Makes yummy and healthy treats! Add other things if you want, e.g. peanut butter. Many dogs get upset tummies from treats and things their tummy isn't used to. Using the daily kibble in the treats, helps this problem!

Cheese is as bad for dogs as it is for humans. It simply has a lot of fat in it but given in moderation as TREATS is fine.

My first look at Videojug and I am completely taken with this. The dog recipes are wonderful, both the presenter and narrator are great, and the dogs are beautiful. My only advice would be to add recipe conversions for your non-metric audience on the printed recipe. I'll keep watching for many new ideas for my four-legged companions. Thanks!
