How To Make Fisherman's Pie

A Hearty Fisherman's Pie Recipe seasoned with herbs and best served with a light salad. A favourite for generations! Appreciate our Fisherman's Pie recipe.

You will need…

  • 1 onion
  • 2 cloves
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 600 ml milk
  • 300 ml cream
  • 500 g cod fillet
  • 4 eggs, hard boiled and peeled
  • 100 g butter
  • 45 g flour
  • 5 Tbsp parsley, chopped
  • freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1 ¼ kg potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 1 egg yolk
  • salt and pepper
  • 1 large pan
  • 1 potato masher
  • 1 large plate
  • 1 shallow oven proof dish
  • 1 medium pan
  • 1 sieve
  • 1 chopping board
  • 1 knife
  • 1 slotted spoon
  • 1 fork

Step 1:

Cook the fish

Stud the onion with the cloves. Put it into a large pan with the bay leaf, 450ml of the milk, the cream and the cod. Place the pan on the stove bring to the boil and simmer for 8 minutes.

Step 2:

Remove fish

When the fish is cooked, lift it out of the pan with a slotted spoon, place it on a plate and leave it to cool. Strain the liquid through a sieve into a bowl or jug.

Step 3:

Break up the fish

When the fish is cool enough to handle, break it up into large flakes, discarding the skin and the bones.

Step 4:

Place fish in oven proof dish

Sprinkle the fish over the bottom of the oven proof dish.

Step 5:

Slice eggs

Slice the hard boiled eggs and place on top of the fish.

Step 6:

Make the roux

Melt 50g of the butter in a pan, add the flour and cook for 1 minute.

Step 7:

Make the sauce

Gradually stir in the milk mixture we cooked the fish in, continually stirring to avoid any lumps forming, leave on the heat to cook for 5-6 minutes.

Step 8:

Finish the sauce

When the sauce is cooked add the chopped parsley and season with nutmeg and salt and pepper. Pour the sauce over the fish and egg mixture and leave to cool.

Step 9:

Cook potatoes

Place the peeled potatoes in a pan, cover with water, add salt, bring to the boil and simmer for about 20 minutes or until soft.

Step 10:

Mash potatoes

When the potatoes are cooked, drain and mash them until there are no lumps.

Step 11:

Finish mashed potatoes

Add the rest of the butter, egg yolk, salt and pepper to the potatoes; gradually add the rest of the milk until you have a soft spreadable mixture.

Step 12:

Turn on the oven

Preheat the oven to 200ºc/gas mark 6.

Step 13:

Top fish with potatoes

Spoon the potato mix over the top of the fish mixture and spread it with a fork.

Step 14:

Cook

Place the fish pie in the oven and cook until golden brown for about 35-40 minutes.

Step 15:

Finish

Take the fish pie out of the oven and serve.

I wonder if there is a way of making this without using hard boiled eggs. I've been told to use the "liquid" eggs as they have less cholesterol, and would like to use them in this.

Described by all members of our family, young and old, as the best Fisherman's pie in the world! I do not use hard boiled eggs though, I just add extra fish and prawns. This is a winner and so simple to make. Try it, it will become a regular in your household too!

Yup, that was a good sold no nonesence English receipt. Thanks from Amsterdam. We loved it, although we also continentalled it a bit with prawns, cream cheese for the mash, and some garlic (of course!). Hans, Amsterdam. xxx
