Ingredients

  • Onion
  • Oil
  • Balsamic Vinegar

Step 1: Prepare the Onions

Cut the stalk off the onion, but don't cut the root off. Cut the onion in half width-ways. Peel off a layer including the skin, then cut into thin slices.

Step 2: Fry in Oil

Put the onion in a pan on the hob. Add a generous amount of olive oil, and cook on a low heat stirring now and then. When they become translucent and soft, but not brown, you are ready to caramelised them.

Step 3: Caramelise

Turn the heat right up and add some balsamic vinegar. Allow to sizzle for a couple of minutes. When almost burning a little bit, they are caramelised and ready.

Step 4: Serve

Add to a sausage sandwich, quiche, salad, or as a base for loads of different recipes.
