How To Make Hamster Treats
Here is how to make a hamster treat which provides natural behavior stimulation and fun for the hamsters as well.
Hi, my name's Marie. I'm the deputy manager of the Small Animal Department at Wood Green Animal Shelters. I'm going to tell you how to make hamster treats.
Hamsters need really varied diets, so don't just go for the typical hamster mix in a bowl. You want to add it into enrichment and into their toys and hide it around their accommodation. When you're making a hamster treat, you also want to think about how the hamster's going to find it.
So, the best way is save some toilet rolls from your house or even cereal boxes and you can hide treats in them. What I've got here is a couple of basic toilet rolls and some sheet of paper. Place your toilet roll on to the sheet of paper and just roll it along.
Just wrap the end a bit like a Christmas cracker. Then, what I've got in these bowls here is a variety of different natural treats. Never use all these colorful vitamin blocks and soap blocks and treats full of sugar.
Always go for as many natural treats as you can possibly provide for them. That's going to help your hamster be healthy. So, we've got here some dried carrots, so you can just pop a couple of those in there.
We've also got in this mix some different types of dried pasta. Also in this mix, we've got various types of cereals, please make sure these are once at all coated sugar, so just stand in cereal mixers and they're absolutely fine and you can use all sorts of different process and seed as well. We've even got a bit of puffed wheat in here as well, so pop them in.
You could use also a dried herb and there's many on the market. We've got many here by the naturals and excel range, they can be dried herbs, they can be dried flowers, plants and even dried weeds such as dandelion and plantain, and they're all great and really healthy for your hamster. Pop these in here as well.
We've got a little bit of budgie mix as well. Mix that all around, just tie the end down, and then you can place that into the hamster cage and they're going to have great fun tearing this all apart and taking the treats out of them. What that's doing is encouraging natural behaviour.
In the wilds, hamsters will be foraging, they'll be rummaging and they'll breaking and tearing though different parts of a material. So, it's a great idea if you can try and encourage this behaviour and that way, you're going to keep your hamster healthy and happy. And that's how to make a hamster treat. .
