I am going to show you how to make horseradish mashed potatoes. Basically, the process is getting as far as making mashed potatoes and then adding some horseradish. It really is very simple.
I've got some Maris Piper potatoes here. That is an all-purpose white potato. If you get them from the supermarket, just look on the bag.
It will tell you what they are good for. If you go to your green grocers, just ask them because they will know. This is traditionally a very good mashing potato, though.
I have just peeled them and cut them into quarters. I am just going to pop them into cold water with a good pinch of salt. So, we are just going to bring these up to a boil and cook them until they are nice and soft.
Our potatoes are now ready for mashing. Just take them out, put the knife in, and give it a very gentle tear. As you can see, the potato has just broken apart.
It is just crumbling. Now that we know our potatoes are at a mashable state, we are just going to drain them off. I've put my pan back on the heat.
I put in some butter and some double cream. You can use milk or single cream if you want at this stage. If you are going to use single cream, do not heat it too much because it will split.
You want to heat these up and get your butter melted, then your butter will be evenly distributed throughout your mash as well. Now, we are going to put our potatoes in there and I'm going to just mash those up. If it gets a little bit dry, add some milk or cream.
I've just put some milk in this jug. I'm just going to put a little bit in. I think mash should be nice and creamy and rich.
It has got to be one of my favorite things. Don't overwork the mash, though, because you do not want to make it sort of sticky. At this stage, I am going to turn the heat off because I don't want to let my mash cook on the bottom.
You just want to put your pepper in. You can use white pepper if you do not want black flecks through your mash, but just eating it at home, it doesn't really matter. This is the final bit.
We are just going to put some horseradish into our mash. It is going to make it horseradish mash, obviously. I am just using a jar because, to be honest, that is what most people will have at home.
It is more easily available. Obviously, you can buy fresh horseradish and make your own horseradish sauce with some creme fraiche. That smells incredible.
The amount of horseradish to use really depends on your own personal taste. I love to have horseradish mash with beef stew. I've actually got a recipe for Guinness beef stew on one of my other videos and I think those two together are just incredible.
And that is how to make horseradish mash. .
