How To Make Moisturising Lotion

Videojug and Karen Gilbert present this recipe for a moisturizing lotion that can easily be made at home with just a few simple ingredients and a little time over the stove.

Today, I'm going to show you how to a make moisturizing lotion. For this recipe, you'll need 20 ml of jojoba oil, 5 grams of emulsifying wax, 5 ml or 1 teaspoon of glycerin, preservative 20 drops or 1 ml, the essential oil of your choice. I'm going to use 20 drops of essential oil, I'm going to use lavender today.

You'll also need a glass bottle, preferably with a pump dispenser, this one is a 100 ml. And then finally, you'll need 70 ml of either distilled water or the flower water of your choice. You can either use rose water, lavender, orange flower or just plain distilled water.

We'll also need a thermometer as temperature is quite crucial when you're making a lotion. We're going to be heating our 2 phases separately over pans of boiling water. So, here we've got 2 pans with a small amount of water in each and a double boiler insert.

If you don't have these, you can either place a bowl, a glass heatproof bowl over a pan or Pyrex jugs are fine, too. We're going to heat each phase separately so the oil phase will be measured into pan and then the water phase will be measured into the other. So, the first step, we're going to measure 5 ml, or 1 teaspoon of glycerin into our 70 ml of water and then we're going to place that in our first pan of water, to create the water phase of the moisturizer.

Step two, we're going to add our emulsifying wax, our 5 grams of emulsifying wax to our second pan, and we're going to heat that with the 20 ml of jojoba oil. We're also going to let that melt until all of the emulsifying wax is dissolved in the jojoba oil. And we're going to test the temperature so that both the water and the oil phase come to 75 to 80 degrees, before mixing the two.

And as the lotion cools, it will start to thicken. Now, we still need to add our essential oil and we're going to use lavender, so I'm going to have 20 drops of lavender. And we're just going to pour this lotion into the bottle.

As you can see, it's started to thicken already. Now, I'm going to place the pump dispenser on the bottle, give it a good shake, and that's how you make moisturizing lotion.
