How To Make Olive Oil Soap

Interested in making your own cosmetics? In this Videojug guide Sally Hornsey, cosmetic consultant at Plush Folley, shows you how to make a basil and lime scented olive oil soap.

You Will Need

  • rubber gloves
  • safety glasses
  • 1 jug
  • scales
  • sodium hydroxide
  • olive oil
  • basil essential oil
  • lime essential oil
  • green oxide
  • silicone mould
  • 1 chopping board
  • towels

Weigh 187 g of water in a jug.

Weigh 67 g of sodium hydroxide. Carefully mix this with the water and stir until dissolved, making sure you don't breathe in the fumes.

Weigh 500 g of olive oil and pour into a bowl.

Weigh 7 g of basil oil and 7 g of lime oil.

Carefully pour the sodium Hydroxide solution into the olive oil, then blend with a stick blender until it reaches the 'light trace' stage, which is when it looks a bit like custard.

Add essential oil and mix very well.

Remove about 4 tbsp of the mixture to a beaker, then mix with 1/4 tsp of green oxide.

Pour just enough soap mixture to cover the bottom of the mould. Drizzle over some green mixture in a swirl pattern, then pour more soap mixture in the middle. Repeat this a few times and you will end up with green rings though your soap.

Cover with a chopping board, then with towels, and leave for 24 hours. Leave at room temperature for a couple of weeks until it hardens before use.
