How To Make Onion Bhaji
- Serves:
- 4
- Preparation Time:
- 5 minutes
- Cooking Time:
- 15 minutes
- Total Time:
- 20 minutes
Step 1: You will need:
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 200 g chickpea flour
- 1 tsp baking powder,
- 2 tbsp rice flour
- ½ tsp chilli powder
- ½ tsp turmeric
- ½ tsp cumin powder
- ½ tsp coriander powder
- some salt
- 100 ml water
- 750 ml vegetable oil
- 1 saucepan
- 1 bowl
- 1 whisk
- 1 spoon
- 1 slotted spoon
- tray lined with paper towels
Step 2: Heat the oil
Put the oil into the pan and place it on a medium-high heat.
Step 3: Make the batter
In a bowl, combine the chickpea flour, rice flour, baking powder, chilli, turmeric, cumin, coriander, salt and the water. Mix it together well and add the sliced onion.
Step 4: Check the oil
Check the temperature of the oil by dropping a little batter into it. If it fries slowly, it is at the right temperature.
Step 5: Fry the bhaji
Carefully drop spoons of batter into the oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan, which will make them stick together. Fry them for about 1-2 minutes or until the batter becomes a lovely golden brown. Remove them, place them to drain on the paper-lined tray, and repeat until all the bhaji are cooked.
Step 6: Season and serve
Sprinkle over a little salt and your onion bhaji are ready to serve. They make a perfect appetiser and go well with coriander chutney or cucumber raita, both of which can be found on our website. Enjoy!
Tips & Comments
Add to this Recipe Half a teasp of Mustard Seed and One tabsp Fresh Chopped Coriander. Here's the Secriet, Leave in the fridge over night so that the onion(in the batter) becomes soft, then Fry. Taste The Difference.
Not a cook at all, can barely find my way around a kitchen but I love onion bhajias so I thought I'd give these a try. Followed the recipe to the letter, my batter seemed a lot thicker than the video but I just added water until I could work with it. Everything went as per the video really, the only problem was that they tasted rather bland. However my family liked them and next time I'll increase the amount of spices and see how that makes them taste. Good site, tried a couple of recipes now and they've all gone down well, try egg fried rice and the sweet and sour pork as well, those turned out extremely well and I've got to make them again tomorrow they were so popular.
To make it more crispy and yet soft, add 3-4 tablespoons of hot oil to the prepared batter. Backing powder can be avoided.
I think this is an awesome recipe and have tried different variations which is obviously done to individuals own tastes ... Would suggest that you try it without coriander and less chick pea flour, also very little water because the onions are cooked and more cruncy. Get the recipe, try it as it is and then adapt it to your own taste. Everyone has their own preferences at the end of the day. I have been taking indian cooking lessons but always use this recipe as it is easy and quick.... I have just added a bit more spice and omitted to use any fresh coriander etc... Just experiment and see what you like...
You can substitute the chick pea flour with plain all purpose flour, and baking powder can be avoided to make it more tummy friendly. A spoon of dry parsley or curry leaves(chopped) and a scoop of garam masala (instead of coriander powder) adds special taste when fried.. try this! its sure can turn out to be a non-stop temptation!!!
Ive made these a couple of times & didnt like the video way so I did it my own way & was way better, add more spice & more rice flour than gram flour makes them more crispy & gives them more flavour Mmmm! my kids loved them my way
what can i substitute chickpea flour with ? can i make it at home?
As an indian myself I know this shouldn't called 'Bhaji".it should be Bhajia..Bhaji is diffrent and its means Vegetables..we called it Subji in HIndi.Just make it this correct.Thanks.
what a s**te video. i want my 2:46 minutes back! I also didnt appreciate the "how to lose belly fat" pop up that interupted the video either. over all, it was tragic.
