Looks like there is not enough water or too much of flour (too sticky), so, added water.
Other issues is lack of taste, double or triple the proportions.

I agree with last comment. These are not quite what you would get in an Indian restaurant, but hey! - they went down very well at a dinner party for 30 last week; I couldn't make enough! I too have added some additional ingredients and had to play around with the consistency as the batter was a little stiff (I've probably got drier water!) I too sweetened them up a bit with mango and a handful of fresh coriander. I've also used beer instead of water and wow! Try the recipe anyway, you'll enjoy.

I tried this with regular flour and it worked okay. Bob's Red Mill makes a chickpea flour and New Seasons carries it ($5.69 for 22 oz). Luckily I work not far from Bob's Red Mill and it is much more economical to buy it bulk at the source ($1.39 per lb). I am making it again tonight. 1/2 tsp on all the spices seemed bland so I am doubling the spice tonight. Even substituting regular flour, I thought it was better than any homemade onion ring type dish I have done!

I made onion bhajis a while ago, and whilst I didnt follow this video, it was the same procedure really.

The most important thing I think, is to make sure your batter is not too thin. This will mean the onion doesnt clump together and youll end up with lots of little bits, which are easily burnt. Keep the batter nice and gloopy so the onion stays pretty much where you dunk it.

They're not very filling, but great as a tasty snack, and dont take long to prepare. I like mine on a bed on shredded iceburg lettuce, with a big wedge of lemon to squeeze over. YUM!

One final thing worth mentioning, in the UK at least, Chickpea Flour will often be labelled as Gram Flour.

Too good ... Im orignally from mumbai but living in athens so i know the taste of onion bhaji but the best part in this recieps is the crispy due to rice flour i tried it and it become too good only two things u need to add to get a real flavour i.e. add more red chilly powder and add crush corriander seeds instead of powder it goes well try it !!! that's the original reciepe which locals in mumbai use.... but above all thanks for the idea of rice flour to make it more crispy i really like it....
