How To Make Onion Chutney

In this easy to follow guide Rob Goves of Relish Caterers shows you how to make onion chutney. This sweet and sticky condiment is perfect with cold meats, cheeses or in tarts or quiches.

  • 80 g butter
  • rapeseed oil
  • 5 red onions, thinly sliced
  • salt
  • 190 g soft brown sugar
  • 50 ml balsamic vinegar
  • 150 ml red wine vinegar
  • 50 ml white wine vinegar
  • thyme
  • 1 bay leaves


Start by finely slicing your onions. Cook them down in a pan with the butter and oil, stirring occasionally. As these onions cook down they will begin to caramelise and sweeten, this should take about 5-10 minutes.

Add the sugar, the vinegars, a sprig of thyme and a bay leaf. Cover with a round piece of baking paper and simmer on the stove for a couple of hours until you get the consistency you want.

You can serve the chutney as it is, or store for a couple of weeks in a sterile jar.
