How To Make Purple Plasticine

Purple is a great colour to add to your homemade plasticine collection. So, make sure you don't lose your purple crayons, the essence to a purple plasticine.

Right, now I'm going to show you how to make purple plasticine. We've got our ingredients down here. We need a purple crayon.

I'm lucky enough to have purple. If you don't, you could use red and a blue together. We've got some neutral coloured boot polish.

I have some petroleum jelly and some plain flour. And I'm going to be using a little pot to put it in at the end. Now, we do have to heat the mix of these ingredients.

So, we're going to be using a bain-marie which is boiling water with a separate bowl on top to mix everything in. Alright now, we can see that the water's nicely boiling. We're going to get our purple crayon, break it up into 2 or 3 pieces and let it start melting.

We're also going to take our shoe polish. We just need about a tablespoonful of that. It's difficult to be exact with shoe polish.

You can see straightaway it is melting. Wax crayons do melt at quite a low temperature. Give that a good mix around, okay, and don't forget there will be lots of hot steam coming out of the saucepan so do watch out for your hands.

It's really an adult-only activity. Okay, so next up, we're going to add some Vaseline, again about a tablespoonful. Then this helps to keep the mixture nice and malleable once it's cooled down.

If you don't have it, you just end up with a solid lump of wax again which is not good at all. So we give that a good mix. As you can see, it's almost the consistency of water.

Of course, this is hot wax so do be careful. So, there's only just a few lumps left. I'm going to start to add some flour now and the reason I put that in is to counteract the Vaseline.

With just the Vaseline, I find it just far too sticky on the hand as in you end up covering yourself up when you play with it. So if you add in the flour, it gives it a better consistency. It means you actually can handle it without covering yourself.

You can just put it directly in. You don't have to worry about sieving it or anything like that. As you can see, lumps just get absorbed in.

Put in a little bit more, have a bit more I think, that will do. You can see, it's a lot thicker in the consistency and not quite so watery. So at this point, we're going to transfer it to a separate cup.

Now remember, you've had this bowl in the water for quite some time so always use something to pick it out with. Don't do it directly with your hands. I'm just using a towel which is fine.

It's doubled over. I pour that in to my little cup and we take that, we're going to put that in the fridge fro about 15-20 minutes or so, and there we have purple plasticine. .
