How To Make Red Plasticine
The main ingredient needed for a coloured plasticine is a children's wax crayon. For this video, MAD Jack demonstrates the steps to making red plasticine.
Right, now I'm going to show you how to make red plasticine. For this, we're going to need the ingredients I have here on the table. I have a red wax crayon.
Make sure it is a wax crayon. It doesn't matter about the quality. I just use very very cheap stuff.
We're going to also use some neutral boot polish. Make sure it is neutral. Otherwise, it will overtake the colour of the crayon and we're going to be using some petroleum jelly.
Then, we need also a spoon and a bowl. So first of all, what we need to do, we need to take our bowl and just break up our wax crayon. Then, we'll take a spoonful of shoe polish, put that in there and then we need to heat that over hot water and you can't heat it directly otherwise it will burn.
Then, later on, in order to keep it nice and flexible, we're going to be adding our petroleum jelly. Right, so we've got our boiling water down here, it's sitting up here and I'm going to drop the bowl into the water and it's going to start heating up that wax and the boot polish. Right, so after a couple of minutes, the wax and the show polish would have melted.
As you can see down here, we're almost there. So at this stage, we can just take a small teaspoon of the petroleum jelly. We don't need it very much because we're not making a huge amount of plasticine.
It may take a bit of trial and error. Really, it's up to you on how plastic you want to make it or how solid. The petroleum jelly will mix very easily and what I like to do just to give the plasticine a bit more consistency, for a bit of a less of a waxy texture, is to just add another teaspoonful of plain flour.
Remember, plain flour. You can't use self-raising flour here otherwise you will end up more with a cake. So, we give that a mix in.
You can see, it doesn't matter, you don't need to sieve it or anything like that. The waxy oily texture means that any lumps will easily dissolve and so, we're ending up with a thin liquid here. So now, we've mixed in the flour, we can just gently and carefully take that out and we're going to pour in to a little cup here and then we're just going to put that in the fridge to cool down for about half an hour.
Right, so we've allowed our red plasticine to cool in the fridge. We let it go for about half an hour. I noticed, I tested earlier, you can see my finger mark in there.
Even after 10 or 15 minutes, it's starting to get to the right consistency. So now, we just need to take that out with a spoon. Now, of course, you don't normally keep plasticine in the fridge and even the stuff you buy would go kind of solid so if you want to play with it, all you need to do is warm it up in your hands and as you can see, it has that lovely texture of plasticine.
Now, if you're finding that it is a little bit too greasy, sticking to your hands too much, what you need to do is just pop the cup into a microwave for about 15 – 20 seconds and you can add a little bit more flour. And then, once it's dried again, you'll find that it will be less greasy in texture. So, that is how to make red plasticine. .
