Total Time:
25 minutes

Step 1: Cook the onions

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 50 g finely sliced onion
  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • sea salt
  • freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 thin slice of sirloin steak
  • 2 thick slices of bread, such as ciabatta
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise
  • ½ a bunch of rocket (arugula)
  • 1 tomato, sliced
  • ½ a clove of garlic, chopped
  • 1 small pan
  • 1 chopping board
  • 1 frying or grill pan
  • 1 bowl
  • 1 sharp knife
  • 1 serving plate

Step 2: Add the vinegar

When the onions are golden brown add the vinegar, salt and pepper and cook for another minute. Remove the pan from the heat and set aside until later.

Step 3: Cook the steak

Heat the frying pan, add some oil, then the steak to the pan and season with salt and pepper. Cook for 1 minute, turn and cook the other side for another minute.

Step 4: Remove the steak

When the steak is cooked remove it from the pan, place it on a plate and let it rest for about 5 minutes.

Step 5: Make the garlic mayonnaise

Put the mayonnaise in a bowl, add the garlic, a twist of pepper and a sprinkle of salt, mix well together and set it aside.

Step 6: Make the sandwich

Spread the bread with some garlic mayonnaise. Place a few rocket leaves on top, slice the tomato and place on top of the rocket. Place the onions on top of the tomato, followed by the steak. Finish with another slice of bread.

Step 7: Serve the steak

Cut the sandwich in half, if you wish, serve with salad, fries or potato chips or just eat it on its own.

Looks pretty good. Consider slicing the steak (against the grain) after cooking it. That way, if the meat's a little tough, you aren't pulling the whole steak off the bun while taking a bite. If you're looking to make it a little fancier, you might consider using a New york strip steak instead of the sirloin.

I believe a steak sandwich should be thin enough to eat with your hands - that is to say a thin quality steak slice - ideally fillet and not much more than mustard or horseradish to go with it.
