How To Make Thumbprint Cookies

It's easy to make these festive thumbprint cookies any time. The name comes from the way you use your thumb to indent the dough, and once you learn to make thumbprint cookies, you can change the recipe by filling them with any flavor you like.

Step 1: Pre-Heat

Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees (180 C, Gas Mark 4)

Step 2: Mix

Cream butter and sugar together with a mixer Then add egg yolks and vanilla and beat until smooth. Add the flour and salt a little at a time until a soft dough forms. That's it. Your batter is ready.

Step 3: Roll

Beat the egg whites, then roll your dough into 3/4 inch balls and dip them in. Roll the dough balls in the chopped walnuts, and then put onto a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet, leaving about an inch between.

Step 4: Print

Press your thumb into the middle of each dough ball, and fill the hole with about 1/4 teaspoon of the preserves.

Step 5: Bake

Bake your cookies about 15 minutes, until they're set. Let them cool on the pan for a minute, and then move them to a cooling rack. This recipe makes abut 3 dozen cookies.

Step 6: Done.
