Preparation Time:

Cooking Time:

Total Time:
1 hour 10 minutes
Oven Temperature:
180° c  -  360° f

Step 1: Cook the onion and garlic

  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • ½ can of chopped tomatoes
  • ½ can of tomato paste
  • ½ tsp sugar
  • ½ tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tbsp fresh basil
  • ½ tsp lemon juice
  • 1 can of tuna, drained
  • 250 g lasagne sheets
  • 220 g mozzarella cheese, thinly sliced
  • 100 g parmesan cheese, grated
  • 80 g butter
  • 50 g plain flour
  • 750 ml milk
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1 frying pan
  • 1 spoon
  • 1 wooden spoon
  • 1 medium-sized saucepan
  • 1 casserole dish

Step 2: Add more ingredients for the sauce

Add the chopped tomato, tomato paste, sugar, oregano, basil and lemon juice. Season well with salt and pepper, mix together and simmer uncovered for 10 minutes.

Step 3: Add the tuna

Stir in the tuna then remove the pan from the heat.

Step 4: Preheat the oven

Set the temperature to 180ºC, that's 350ºF or gas mark 4.

Step 5: Make the bechamel sauce

Melt butter in the saucepan, then add the flour and stir in well. While stirring, slowly pour in the milk.

Season with salt and pepper.

Let the sauce thicken by gradually bringing it to the boil whilst continually stirring.

Finally add the parmesan cheese, stir in and remove sauce from the heat.

Step 6: Layer the lasagne and sauces in the casserole dish

To build the lasagne, firstly spoon some tuna sauce over the bottom of the casserole dish.

Next, add a layer of lasagne and spread some bechamel sauce on top.

Finally add a layer of mozzarella.

Repeat this process until you've added all the ingredients. The last layer should be the béchamel sauce which will become crisp in the oven.

Step 7: Bake

Place the dish in the middle of the oven and bake for 35 minutes or until the bechamel sauce has turned golden-brown.

Step 8: Remove from the oven and serve

When golden and bubbling, remove the lasagne from the oven and serve while piping hot with a fresh, green salad and crusty bread.

Hi, my mum has just bought me a 1.8kg tin of tuna that was on special, I had no idea what to do with so much tuna until I saw this recipe, my intention is to double up on the amount of tuna used and to make the recipe sufficient to fill six individual caserole dishes, which my family can enjoy tomorrow night, served with a Greek salad and Garlic bread.

If you want to save time, use Dolmio or another bolognese sauce, especially ones with little vegetable chunks. To reduce the cost, dont use mozzarella, as parmesan and the thick beschemel sauce is enough. Also, parmesan on top of the final beschemal layer makes it nicer.
