How To Make White Plasticine

With a white wax crayon, neutral shoe polish, petroleum jelly and some flour, you can be on your way to making your own white plasticine at home for a cool experiment.

Right, now I'm going to show you how to make white plasticine. We've got the ingredients down here on the table. I have a white children's wax crayon, make sure it is a wax crayon.

Then we have some neutral boot polish. Again, make sure it is a neutral colour otherwise the black or brown of our boot polish will overtake the white, of course, and then we also have petroleum jelly that's going to help to keep it malleable and make sure it doesn't go solid. So, we also need a spoon because we're going to be mixing stuff and a heat-proof bowl.

We've got to melt the wax and so, therefore, you need something heat-proof. We're going to heat it over hot water, actually. So the first thing we have to do, we just need to break up our wax crayon, put it in our bowl, and then we'll just take some of our boot polish.

You don't really need specific amounts for this, we can just put that in and the more you want, the more you put in. I'll just put in another little tiny spoon and then we have to apply this to the boiling water and then later, we'll be adding the petroleum jelly. Right, so here we have our shoe polish and white crayon.

We're going to put that into the boiling water here and we start to give it a stir, boiling nice on a pot of water, so this won't take very long. Right, so we're now on the stage where everything is more or less melted. We can see here, we're just left with a white liquid.

For this stage, we're going to add just a very small amount of petroleum jelly. That will do. Put that in.

This doesn't take long at all to melt in. Make sure it's all nicely mixed and also at this stage, I quite like to put in just a little bit of flour and that will help to give the plasticine a bit more consistency. It's going to be less waxy to the touch and it's not going to melt so much in your hands.

So again, really not very much, that will be fine, drop that in. Don't worry about sieving it. It will all get mixed in very easily because we're using oil instead of water.

You can see there already, we've got a white plasticine and now, we're just going to take it out of the water very carefully, obviously. We don't want to hurt ourselves so I'm just going to grab the bowl, pour that into a little cup and then that just need to be put into the fridge for about half an hour. Right, so we've allowed our white plasticine to cool off in the fridge.

As you can see here, it's gone hard. It's taking about half an hour but if you want to leave it for a little bit less, that's fine, and what you will see though, of course, it's a little bit too hard to play with yet. So all you need to do is take it out with the spoon, it will come out more a lump, then just with the heat of your hands, start to fold it, mix it together and see, here you have to put it into any shape you like.

Now, if you are finding it is a little bit too greasy, all you need to do, put it back in the cup, put it into the microwave for 15 or 20 seconds and then add a little bit more flour and then you'll end up with something with a lot stiffer consistency. So, that's how you make white plasticine.
