How To Make Woody Perfumes

Some of the most iconic fragrances for both men and women are categorized as woody and woody-chypre, which generally have accords of moss, wood, and spicy notes. Perfume expert Tanya Moulding shows viewers step-by-step techniques to blend their own woody perfumes using essential oils.

In this video, we are going to make a woody-chypre perfume. Woody-chypre usually has mosses, woods, and some spices, and maybe some florals and herbs then. So, what we will need today is some coconut oil, which you can usually purchase online.

We're going to be using rose attar, cedarwood, clary sage (which is quite a fresh herb), vetiver, which is a grass, very smoky, and we should also be using petitgrain. So, hopefully, this will turn out to be quite a nice foresty oil - nice and green and woody. First of all, we're going to add our vetiver.

This is quite a thick essential oil. We're going to add four drops and as you can see, it's quite gloopy so it's quite a slow drop, so be patient. Once you've added your four drops of vetiver, we then will be adding our cedarwood.

We need eight drops of our cedarwood, and then clary sage - four drops. One drop of rose, well, we have two drops in then but I don't think that will make much difference. And with the petitgrain, we are going to be adding three drops.

Petitgrain is a kind of quite citrusy note, but it has like a green, woody undertone to it so it will blend really nicely with this. We're now going to add our coconut oil, ten milliliters, approximately. Stir it 'round with our glass stirrer and then decant into the rollerball, just going to top a little bit up so it's just under the lip.

Place the roller ball with a little bit of a push, and there we have our woody-chypre perfume. .
