How To Make Your Lips Look Great With Lip Liner

Why would you use lip liner and how is it used? Find out how to get the most out of your lip liner with this step by step guide to choosing and applying lip liner. Follow our professional make up artist, and you can have perfect lips in just a few minutes by applying your lip liner properly.

Step 1: You will need

- Lip liner
- Lip balm
- Lipstick or Lip gloss

Step 2: Why use lip liner?

Lip liner is used to give extra definition to the lips, and to stop heavily pigmented lipsticks, like bright red from bleeding on to the skin around the lips. It isn't always necessary, lipstick can be applied without it.

Step 3: Choose a lip liner

The lip liner should blend in to the lipstick colour, so it should be the same shade or just slightly darker. If this is not available, use a neutral colour.

Step 4: Moisturise the lips

If you have dry lips use lip balm to smooth and moisturise the lips before applying any other product

Step 5: Sharpen the pencil

Sharpen the pencil before you use it, to get a precise line, and to remove any bacteria that might have built up on the pencil, since you last used it.

Before sharpening the pencil, put it in the fridge for a while, this will stop the pencil breaking as you sharpen it.

Step 6: Drawing the line

Draw the pencil along the line of the lips from the middle to the outer edges

Step 7: The possibilities

You can minimize larger lips by drawing the line slightly inside the natural curve of the lip.

Alternatively you can maximize smaller lips by drawing the line just outside of the natural lip at the outer corners of the mouth and blend carefully.

Step 8: Problem lips

Lip liner can be used to correct lips with an unsymmetrical curve, use inside the natural line on the larger side, and slightly outside on the smaller side.

Step 9: Finish the lips

You can fill in the lips with lipstick, blending in to the liner with a brush or your finger. Alternatively you can blend the lip liner to nothing towards the centre of the lips, and then cover the lips with lip gloss.
