This Video will teach you how to put the icing on your cake!
I'm going to show you how to make a very simple frosting or butter cream. First of all, take your unsalted butter out room temperature, that's important, and dice it up. OK? Put it into your mixing bowl.
If you haven't got an electric mixer, you can do it by hand as well. Take a sieve and your icing sugar and the next step is to pass the icing sugar through the sieve and onto the butter and then we're going to put it into the machine that beats it with a K bar or paddle bar, it's sometimes called, until it's made a nice, smooth incorporated icing. If for any reason, during the mixing, it's too thick, you can add a little bit of milk just to bring it down.
The recipe does call for two teaspoons of milk, which is an addition you can add if it needs it. Passing it through a sieve just gets all the lumps out, which means you're going to have a nice smooth finish on your icing as a result. The icing sugar is in.
We'll just give it a mix. We're just going to add a few spoons of milk into the mix. And then just start bringing the mix together.
The reason for bringing it together now is just so that when we put it in our machine, we don't get big plumes of icing sugar covering the kitchen. Into the machine, and we're starting on low speed, just start mixing it together. When you're happy with all the sugars mixing with the butter, then you can turn it up and beat it, trying to get that smooth finish.
OK, that's our icing ready. And you can see it's nice and smooth and all incorporated. You'll need a piping bag and a piping nozzle.
It's up to you whether you use a star shape or a round shape to apply to your cupcakes, which is what I'm going to show you today. Cut the end of your disposable piping bag off and then put your nozzle into the piping bag. The easiest way to do this is to fill this is to turn it inside out and make a hole, and take your icing and push it to the bottom of the piping bag.
You pinch at the bottom and just squeeze the piping bag and twist until your icing starts to come through. OK, so we've got our icing in a piping bag, and I've got a star nozzle on this one. And we're going to take our cupcakes, and, just to show you how to pipe.
Start from the outside, go around the cakes, and come up to a point. Around the outside, and come up to a point. So you can see it here, around the outside and come up to a point.
And that's how to make a very simple white icing, frosting, or butter cream.
