How To Make Your Own Hanging Flower Basket
You can always bring a little colour to your house by having a few hanging baskets. David Ferguson, head gardener and property manager for the National Trust for Scotland at Greenbank Garden, shows you how to plant modern hanging baskets, as well as the more traditional baskets.
You Will Need
- 1 watering can
- peat free multi-purpose compost
- water retentive gel
- longlife fertilizer
- lining
- baskets
- plants
Method
For the traditional baskets: place the liner in the basket, followed by a plastic lining. Fill it with compost, giving each layer you add a sprinkling of water retentive gel and fertilizer. Plant 4 plants into the sides of the basket through the holes in the lining. Cover the roots, leaving a hole in the centre. Free the roots of the central plant, and put it into the centre of the basket. Add a little more fertilizer and gel, then fill up with compost and give it a good water.
With a modern basket: you will not have to add a liner to it. Add compost, gel, and fertilizer to the level of the pre-cut holes. Plant your side plants through the holes, then plant the middle plant and water it in.
