How To Mark Out A Mortice Joint

How To Mark Out A Mortice Joint

Demonstration on how to mark out a mortice joint. VideoJug shows you some great DIY tips on marking out a perfect mortice joint.

Step 1:

Marking Out

The first step is to mark out the mortice joint. Your first task is to mark out the face sides and face edges onto the timber on both pieces. This is best practiced on the timbers best sides.

Step 2:

Visual Appearance

For good visual appearance avoid knots and other defects. For a good visual appearance the best steps are to mark the joints out on the edges first. You then need to tick mark across the faces where cuts do not happen.

Step 3:

Why Mark?

The idea being that marking out is not required, so confusion in marking out is reduced. Always use a try square correctly flat to the work to perform an accurate job; a A sharp pencil must be used to carry out this task. A 2H is best for this job as it will last well and can also be seen clearly.
