How To Master Potty Training A Cat
In this short VideoJug film, Animal Behaviorist Janetta Smith gives some helpful tips to cat owners on how to potty train your pet cat at home.
I'm just going to talk through a few issues about how to potty train a cat. It can be of use when you get a new kitten, bring that into the house, or a rescue cat, or an older cat, or introducing a new cat into the environment. Make sure you provide lots of litter trays around the house, whether you're going to use him as an indoor cat or an outdoor cat.
Just make sure that they're aware that there are litter trays around the house by positioning them in areas where they can assess, like in kitchens, near back doors, hallways. When you use cat litter, try and make sure you use litter things, like cat sand, fool's earth, that sort of thing, because they like to dig and they replicate that. Try and avoid newspaper, because newspaper tends to absorb urine and you often get smells, and cats are very, very clean creatures and they won't go back into the litter tray if it's absorbed or smells, so cat sand and fool's earth with actually absorb that.
Clean the litter trays out regularly, normally every day, or every other day because again, if the cat thinks it's dirty, it will not go in there or tend to urinate somewhere else or defecate somewhere else. Also, make positive reinforcement if you've got a kitten, it may be worth the first couple of days of picking the kitten up and putting them into the litter tray to encourage them to go into it. If they've gone in and they've gone to the toilet, you can actually praise them, maybe with using a treat or definitely praising them with good girl, good boy.
And do not, do not, if they have accidents or miss the tray, actually tell them off because negative reinforcement will actually stress them out and can encourage them to do the same thing. So, just to recap, make sure you've got lots of litter trays, use a typical, good cat litter that will absorb the urine smell, like cat sand or fool's earth, avoid newspapers to avoid too much smell, clean the trays out on a regular basis because cats are very, very clean, and positive reinforcement. And that is how to make sure you potty train your cat properly. .
