How To Organize A Kitchen Drawer

Are your kitchen drawers a minefield of sharp knives, strange utensils and random junk? Let professional organizer Mary Astadourian show you how to have beautifully organized drawers in a few simple steps. Are your kitchen drawers a minefield of sharp knives, strange utensils and random junk? Let professional organizer Mary Astadourian show you how to have beautifully organized drawers in a few simple steps.

Step 1: Empty Your Drawer

Take everything out of your drawer. Yes, EVERYTHING. You can't see what you have until you've emptied the drawer completely.

Step 2: Group Like With Like

Start grouping similar items. Knives go with knives, spatulas with spatulas, serving utensils with serving utensils. Grouping items will help you realize what you have, what you need, and better yet, what you can toss because you have too many of them.

Step 3: "Containerize"

Use your dividers or containers to split your drawer into manageable sections. If you have odd-shaped drawers, consider buying individual drawer containers instead of one big drawer divider so that you can customize the layout to your space. And remember, always measure your drawers before you go container shopping.

Step 4: Put It Away

Put everything back into your drawer, keeping like items together, and using the sections you've created. Everything should fit perfectly, down to the last knife.

I find it funny that you can be a professional organizer, I think people will just assume she has major OCD or something..

K, that's stupid. Did you see how she had a huge pile of stuff and when she went to put it in the drawer, she had like 6 items? If the stuff barely fit BEFORE, she won't be able to get it in AFTER putting organizing trays in the drawer, too.
