Correct preparation and materials are very important when painting exterior walls. This video shows you how to paint an exterior masonry sill.
My name's Tom. I work for Aspect Maintenance. I am a painter and decorator, and I'm just going to show you how we would paint any bare concrete or plaster on an exterior to a house.
So, the first thing you would need, which we would always use if you've got a bare concrete or stone that you're going to paint, is a stabilising solution which you put on before you put any paint onto an exterior surface. So, what we've got here is just a bare concrete lintel in fact, which has never been painted to a window sill, so this is the concrete lintel. We're going to put a stabilising solution on it first, so that it's ready to paint up and finish in white masonry paint - Dulux, which is what we'd always use.
You can use any exterior, as long as it's an exterior masonry paint. So, what Arthur is doing here is he's just brushing off the masonry first, just to make sure it's all clean of any dust or grit, or anything like that, before you put you first primer coat on. So, what Arthur is now doing is he's painting the window sill, which we've primed in a Dulux Weathershield masonry paint - white, but you can use any colour you like.
You can get all sorts of different colours, it just has to be a weathershield masonry paint; Dulux, or Leyland, or whichever you choose, but we always use Dulux. And that's how you would paint an exterior masonry sill.
